Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched by NASA to study the dark universe

NASA successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on August 30, 2026, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The observatory was carried into space by a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket and is currently traveling toward the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point, located approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth.

The mission, valued at approximately $4.3 billion to $5 billion, aims to investigate fundamental cosmic mysteries, including dark matter, dark energy, and the expansion of the universe. The telescope is equipped with a 2.4-meter primary mirror—the same size as the Hubble Space Telescope—but features a Wide Field Instrument that provides a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble’s. This capability allows the observatory to survey the sky significantly faster.

Key technological features include a 300-megapixel infrared camera and a Coronagraph Instrument designed to block starlight to observe exoplanets and protoplanetary disks directly. NASA expects to release the first scientific images from the mission in early 2027 following a multi-month commissioning and calibration phase.
