NASA Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope set for August launch

NASA is preparing to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, with a target launch date of August 30 from Florida. The observatory is designed to survey massive areas of the sky to investigate dark energy and the prevalence of exoplanets.

Unlike the Hubble Space Telescope, which provides sharp imaging of specific targets, or the James Webb Space Telescope, which focuses on deep infrared sensitivity, the Roman telescope will feature a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble's. This allows for wide-scale statistical surveys of millions of galaxies and stars, helping scientists understand the accelerating expansion of the universe through methods such as weak gravitational lensing.

As part of a public engagement campaign, over 1.3 million names have been recorded on an SD card to be carried aboard the spacecraft, serving as a digital time capsule. The mission honors Nancy Grace Roman, NASA's first chief astronomer.
