NASA Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to launch from Florida
NASA is preparing to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from Florida. Named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, the observatory is designed to survey the sky at a much larger scale than the James Webb Space Telescope. While the James Webb telescope focuses on high-detail observations of individual objects, the Roman telescope will catalog vast areas of the cosmos to provide a broader understanding of the universe’s structure.
A primary mission objective is to map all the stars in the Milky Way galaxy, a task that would take the Hubble Space Telescope a century but is expected to take the Roman telescope only one month. The observatory will also search for exoplanets and use Type Ia supernovas to measure the rate of the universe’s expansion, potentially testing or refining current cosmological theories.
To manage the complex data processing required for these wide-scale surveys, NASA’s Quantum Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (QuAIL) is utilizing quantum computing and machine learning. This collaboration involves NASA, Google Quantum AI, and USRA to apply quantum optimization to mission challenges.
