NASA oceanographer visits University of Split to present satellite ocean research

NASA oceanographer Professor Ivona Cetinić visited the Faculty of Science at the University of Split to present research regarding the PACE satellite mission. As a researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Cetinić participated in the PHOTOCLIM project to demonstrate how hyperspectral sensors on the PACE satellite provide new perspectives on ocean research.

The satellite mission collects detailed data on the properties of the ocean, atmosphere, and land. A primary focus of this technology is the study of phytoplankton, microscopic organisms essential to marine ecosystems and the carbon cycle. By monitoring changes in ocean color through advanced sensors and algorithms, scientists can estimate phytoplankton concentrations across large spatial scales. Combining this satellite data with direct in-situ oceanographic measurements allows for a more comprehensive understanding of marine ecosystem changes.
