NASA opens new wind tunnel in Virginia for lunar and Mars missions

NASA inaugurated its first new wind tunnel in more than four decades at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. The Flight Dynamic Research Facility occupies 2,320 m², consolidating two historic tunnels into a single installation.

The tunnel is powered by four 750‑horsepower motors driving 4.2‑metre carbon‑fiber propellers, producing air speeds up to 188 km/h (117 mph). Its 6‑metre‑diameter test chamber can accommodate heavier and larger models, allowing engineers to study aircraft, rockets, spacecraft, parachutes, drones and other vehicles under controlled conditions.

NASA says the facility will support future lunar and Mars missions by testing entry, descent and landing phases, improving performance and safety while reducing maintenance costs through greater energy efficiency. Administrator Jared Isaacman highlighted the tunnel’s role in shaping the next generation of aviation and space exploration.
