NASA Parker Solar Probe reveals hidden order in solar wind plasma
NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has uncovered a previously unobserved pattern within the chaotic plasma turbulence of the solar wind. An international research team, publishing findings in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, discovered that magnetic field fluctuations exhibit a specific preference in rotation direction depending on their scale.
Researchers observed that large-scale magnetic field fluctuations tend to rotate counter-clockwise, while small-scale fluctuations tend to rotate clockwise. This shift occurs as the plasma transitions from large-scale collective movement to a physical regime dominated by individual particle dynamics. This phenomenon becomes more pronounced as the probe moves further from the Sun.
Understanding these magnetic field behaviors is significant not only for space physics but also for predicting geomagnetic storms that can impact technological systems on Earth.
