NASA Perseverance detects record organic carbon in Mars' Jezero crater
NASA's Perseverance rover has used its SHERLOC instrument to map and analyze rock samples in the Bright Angel formation of Jezero crater, uncovering the highest concentration of macro‑molecular carbon (MMC) ever recorded on Mars. The carbon was found just microns below the surface, shielded by clay‑rich material, and is associated with ancient lake‑derived mudstones, minerals, and sulfates that formed billions of years ago when liquid water was abundant.
Scientists say the finding strengthens the case that organic compounds were widespread in Mars' ancient lakes, but it does not prove past life. Confirmation will require returning the samples to Earth, a step that faces funding cuts in the U.S. Mars Sample Return plan and could give China an opportunity to lead future sample‑return missions.
The discovery highlights the planet’s potential for habitability and sets a target for future exploration aimed at distinguishing biotic from abiotic origins of the detected organics.
