NASA Perseverance rover detects complex organic carbon on Mars rocks
NASA's Perseverance rover has identified complex organic carbon on the surface of two mudstone rocks in Jezero crater’s Bright Angel formation. Using its SHERLOC laser spectrometer, the rover measured hundreds of organic detections, marking the first observation of macromolecular carbon on an un‑drilled Martian rock surface. Scientists say the carbon could stem from ancient microbial life, meteoritic material, or abiotic processes, and its presence in multiple rock layers suggests organics may have been widespread on early Mars. The findings build on earlier detections at Gale crater and strengthen the case for bringing Perseverance‑cached samples back to Earth for detailed analysis.
