NASA Perseverance rover detects complex organics in Mars' Jezero crater

NASA's Perseverance rover, part of the Mars 2020 mission, has analyzed rocks in the Jezero crater and identified complex organic molecules. The rover used its SHERLOC spectroscopic instrument to detect carbon‑based compounds in sedimentary rocks that formed when the crater once hosted a lake and river delta billions of years ago.

Scientists say the organic signals could preserve clues about the ancient environment and potential habitability of early Mars, but they do not constitute proof of past life. The mission also aims to collect and cache samples that could be returned to Earth by future sample‑return missions for detailed laboratory analysis.
