NASA Perseverance rover detects organic carbon beneath Mars surface

NASA's Perseverance rover has identified organic carbon preserved just beneath the surface of Mars. The carbon was found in a rock sample from the Cheyava Falls outcrop within the Bright Angel formation in Jezero crater. Analysis was performed with the rover's SHERLOC instrument (Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman & Luminescence for Organics & Chemicals), which revealed macromolecular carbon (MMC) that can arise from biological or abiotic processes.

The sample was sealed in a tube, nicknamed Sapphire Canyon, for return to Earth where high‑sensitivity laboratory techniques will be applied to determine the carbon’s origin. The discovery, announced on 7 August 2026, has renewed scientific interest in the possibility that ancient Mars may have supported life.

The finding builds on earlier observations by Perseverance, which first reported a potential biosignature in July 2024, and adds new mineral and elemental data that could inform future Mars exploration missions.
