NASA Perseverance rover finds clues suggesting ancient life on Mars

NASA's Perseverance rover has detected a combination of minerals produced by Earth‑like microbes and complex organic matter in Martian rocks, raising the likelihood that Mars once hosted life. The findings, presented at the COSPAR conference in Florence, were explained by astrobiologist Teresa Fornaro of Italy’s INAF, who said the evidence points to possible subsurface microorganisms protected from surface radiation.

The organic material shows altered structures, making its origin uncertain, and definitive proof will require analysis of the collected samples back on Earth. Samples gathered in the summer of 2024 contain traces with potential biological signatures. NASA Administrator Sean Duffy called the discovery “the moment we are closer than ever to life on Mars.” Future missions such as ESA’s ExoMars and the Rosalind Franklin rover, slated for a 2028 launch and 2030 landing, aim to further investigate the planet’s habitability.
