NASA Perseverance Rover Hits Marathon Distance on Mars

NASA’s Perseverance rover has traveled the equivalent of a full marathon—42.195 km (26.2 mi)—on the surface of Mars. The milestone was reached on the rover’s 1,890th Martian day (sol) after five years and four months of operation.

The achievement was documented by a high‑resolution photograph taken on 13 June 2026 by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s HiRISE camera, showing Perseverance west of Jezero Crater in the area the team calls “Arbot.” This distance surpasses the previous record held by the Opportunity rover, which needed more than eleven years to cover the same length.

Perseverance’s mission is managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Caltech) in Southern California, while the orbiter that captured the image was built by Lockheed Martin and the HiRISE camera by BAE Systems and operated by the University of Arizona.
