NASA Perseverance rover uses AI for navigation and finds complex carbon on Mars
NASA’s Perseverance rover completed its first fully AI‑planned traverses on the Jezero crater’s rim, covering 210 m on 8 December and 246 m on 10 December. The generative‑AI system, developed with Anthropic, analyzed high‑resolution images and digital elevation models, generated waypoint routes, and had its plans verified in a digital twin before transmission to the rover.
In a separate study, Perseverance’s SHERLOC instrument detected macromolecular organic carbon in sedimentary rocks of the Bright Angel outcrop within the same crater. The researchers described the material as a robust form of carbon that can survive long periods, offering a new line of inquiry into Mars’s ancient habitability, though they cautioned it does not constitute direct evidence of past life.
Both advances highlight growing autonomy in planetary exploration and provide fresh data for assessing Mars’s geological history and potential for life.
