NASA prepares CADRE mission to deploy autonomous lunar rovers

NASA is preparing the CADRE mission, which will deploy three small autonomous rovers to the Moon. Unlike previous lunar missions that relied heavily on commands sent from Earth, these robots are designed to communicate with each other and make independent decisions to achieve specific research objectives.

Each rover is roughly the size of a small suitcase and features four wheels, stereo cameras, navigation sensors, and radar capable of subsurface analysis to create 3D maps. The system is designed for collaboration: a lead rover will receive objectives, develop a strategy, and distribute tasks to the other units. These units will then navigate obstacles and collect data autonomously.

To manage the extreme lunar environment, including high radiation and intense heat, the rovers will operate on a cycle of 30 minutes of activity followed by 30 minutes of rest to allow components to cool.
