NASA prepares Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope for launch
NASA is advancing the deployment of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which is currently undergoing integration and testing. At the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, engineers have begun connecting the observatory to SpaceX hardware. The telescope has been attached to its payload adaptor and is being prepared for integration with a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
While one report indicates a target launch as early as August 30, another timeline suggests a launch window opening in the fall of 2026, with a baseline target of May 2027. Once launched, the mission will transit approximately 1 million miles to reach the second Lagrange point (L2) to provide an optimal thermal environment for deep-space observation.
The observatory is equipped with a 288-megapixel Wide Field Instrument designed to study dark energy and dark matter by capturing high-resolution images of the sky. Additionally, a Coronagraph Instrument will serve as a technology demonstration to enable high-contrast imaging of exoplanetary systems by suppressing the glare of host stars.
