NASA Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope enters scientific commissioning phase
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has entered its final scientific commissioning phase, marking a critical step before the commencement of full scientific observations. Following its launch on August 30 aboard a Falcon Heavy, the observatory is currently traveling toward the L2 Lagrange point, with orbital insertion expected in early December.
Engineering teams have successfully completed comprehensive checks of the telescope and its primary Wide Field Instrument, a 300-megapixel infrared camera. Recent precision adjustments—including moving the secondary mirror by a fraction of a human hair's diameter—have resulted in optical performance that exceeds original design expectations. Specifically, the imaging error was reduced to 63 nanometers RMS, significantly better than the initial 90 nanometer RMS requirement.
With the Wide Field Instrument successfully activated and brought to its operating temperature of approximately -183 °C, the mission is positioned to study dark matter, dark energy, and galaxy structures. The first scientific images are anticipated to arrive in early 2027.
