NASA readies Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope for August 2026 launch

NASA announced that the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has completed its final preparation steps and is slated for launch on 30 August 2026. The observatory will ride a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida and travel to the Sun‑Earth L2 point, about 1.5 million km from Earth, where it will operate alongside the James Webb telescope.

The Roman telescope features a 2.4‑metre primary mirror and a 300‑megapixel infrared camera, enabling it to map vast regions of the sky up to a thousand times faster than the Hubble Space Telescope. Its science goals include probing dark matter and dark energy, measuring the universe’s accelerating expansion, and discovering roughly 100 000 exoplanets. Project manager Jackie Townsend confirmed that all major procedures are finished and the spacecraft is ready for its journey to deepen humanity’s view of the cosmos.
