NASA Readies Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope for August Launch

NASA is preparing to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center in late August. The mission is eight months ahead of its original schedule and remains under budget, an uncommon achievement for a flagship NASA project.

The observatory, named after NASA’s first chief of astronomy and its first female executive, carries a wide‑field infrared instrument and a coronagraph. The wide‑field instrument will capture infrared light that penetrates cosmic dust, enabling surveys of vast sky areas at a speed about 1,000 times faster than the Hubble Space Telescope. The coronagraph will block the glare of nearby stars, allowing astronomers to detect faint objects such as exoplanets and dust disks. Together, these tools are expected to help answer fundamental questions about how the universe began, what it is made of, and how it has evolved over time.
