NASA recognizes Canary Islands for Artemis mission safety support

NASA has formally recognized the Canary Islands' emergency services, specifically the CECOES 112 coordination center, for their role in safety preparations for the Artemis lunar exploration program.

Following a visit from a high-level NASA medical and contingency delegation in April, the agency evaluated the archipelago's capacity to respond to potential emergencies. Due to its Atlantic location, the Canary Islands are a key area of interest for contingency scenarios, such as the potential splashdown of a space capsule in the waters between the islands and Africa.

NASA officials, including James D. Polk, Director of Health and Medical Affairs, noted that the coordination efforts extend beyond astronaut medical care to include the safety of maritime traffic and vessels located near hypothetical landing zones. The recognition was delivered this week by Dr. Fernando Guillén, NASA's representative for Macaronesia, to local government officials.
