NASA report details advancements in space telescope technology

NASA’s Astrophysics QuadCharts 2026 report details technical developments in space telescope components, including detectors, optics, telescope structures, and scientific software. The compilation tracks the progress of various projects, noting which engineering goals have been met and which capabilities require further advancement.

One highlighted area of research involves near-infrared detectors designed to observe faint astronomical signals, such as those from distant galaxies and planets outside the Solar System. A project led by the University of California, Berkeley, is studying linear-mode avalanche photodiode arrays. The team reported that key metrics, including detector read noise, dark current, and glow, remained within acceptable limits for measuring weak light.
