Indonesia battles severe forest fires and widespread haze
Indonesia is facing a severe escalation of forest and land fires, with officials describing the situation as an international disaster. In Palangka Raya, the emergency response status has been extended to November 9, 2026, following 909 fire incidents that burned approximately 1,448 hectares. The resulting haze has significantly impacted air quality across various regions and disrupted thousands of domestic flights since August 2026.
To combat the fires, the government is employing water bombing operations, which have seen over 5,000 flight cycles. Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni is intensifying these efforts, particularly in the Tanjung Puting National Park, by relocating aircraft to improve operational reach. Additionally, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is evaluating the use of dry ice for weather modification to break through atmospheric temperature inversions that are currently trapping smoke near the ground.
Legislators have called for greater accountability from foreign entities holding business concessions in Indonesia, urging them to assist in prevention and management. Meanwhile, health concerns are rising, prompting calls for increased medical support for vulnerable populations, including infants and the elderly.
