NASA satellites have detected a massive phytoplankton bloom in the South Atlantic near the Falkland Islands. The biological phenomenon, which was only visible from space, created striking visual patterns of milky white, light blue, and turquoise in the ocean waters.
The bloom is attributed to a high concentration of coccolithophores, microscopic organisms covered in calcium carbonate that alter how sunlight reflects off the water. This event was captured by hyperspectral sensors from NASA’s PACE mission, which studies the composition and behavior of Earth’s oceans and atmosphere.
Scientific analysis suggests the explosion of life was triggered by an ideal combination of sunlight, temperature, and nutrient availability, facilitated by ocean currents.
