NASA schedules Roman Space Telescope launch for August 30 2026

NASA announced that the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will lift off on August 30, 2026, eight months earlier than previously planned. The observatory will be launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center and will travel to the Sun‑Earth L2 Lagrange point, about 1.5 million km from Earth.

The Roman telescope features a field of view a hundred times larger than Hubble’s and advanced infrared optics. Its scientific goals include mapping dark matter and dark energy, cataloguing exoplanets—including free‑floating worlds— and surveying millions of galaxies to study the universe’s evolution. The mission is designed to complement other space observatories such as the James Webb Telescope and ESA’s Euclid, with a planned five‑year operational period at L2.

Preparations at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center include final integration, fueling with hydrazine, and extensive system tests before encapsulation and launch.
