NASA scientists identify unusual rectangular iceberg in Antarctica

During the IceBridge mission, NASA scientists discovered a massive, rectangular-shaped iceberg near the Larsen C shelf in Antarctica. The iceberg, weighing hundreds of billions of tons, featured sharp, geometric edges that initially appeared artificial.

Experts have identified the formation as a tabular iceberg, a natural phenomenon characterized by steep sides and flat surfaces. While the edges can approach 90-degree angles, scientists note that wind and wave action eventually erode these precise shapes. The discovery follows years of polar research aimed at monitoring changes in ice thickness and accumulation.
