NASA seeks commercial partners for post-ISS space stations
NASA has released a comprehensive 648-page solicitation to engage commercial companies in developing, building, and operating new space stations in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This initiative aims to ensure a continuous human presence in orbit following the eventual decommissioning of the International Space Station (ISS), which is projected to occur around 2030.
The procurement strategy shifts toward a commercial model where private providers offer a complete package, including life support, payload integration, and mission management. This approach is intended to allow NASA to focus its resources on more complex deep-space missions to the Moon and Mars.
Interested companies must submit plans by December 8, 2026. At least two proposals will be selected following the initial phase, with a final decision expected by April 2027. Winners of the first phase will receive at least $100 million, while subsequent phases involving development and certification are expected to involve billions of dollars in funding. Industry players such as Axiom Space, Voyager Space, and Vast Space are anticipated to participate.
