NASA Sets 30‑Day Martian Dust Exposure Limit for Future Crews

NASA has announced a new permissible exposure limit (PEL) for Martian dust of 0.1 mg per cubic metre averaged over a continuous 30‑day period. The limit, three times stricter than the agency’s earlier lunar‑dust standard, was derived by a working group of scientists, toxicologists and standards engineers who consulted lunar dust toxicology, Martian regolith simulants and rover data. The agency says the conservative limit protects astronauts from the poorly understood health effects of fine iron‑rich Martian particles during short‑duration missions.

Separately, researchers at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center have published findings that global Martian dust storms can generate substantial electric fields in the lower atmosphere. They warn that such electrostatic environments could pose additional hazards to spacecraft, habitats and communication systems, suggesting future mission designs must consider both particulate and electrical risks.
