NASA showcases the Giraffe Nebula in Cassiopeia

NASA has showcased LDN 1295, a dark nebula located in the northern constellation Cassiopeia. Often referred to as the Giraffe Nebula, the interstellar formation consists of dense clouds of dust and gas that obstruct the visible light from stars positioned behind them.

The nebula was originally cataloged in 1962 by American astronomer Beverly Lynds, a pioneer for women in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Due to the way the dust is distributed, observers often experience pareidolia, a psychological phenomenon where the brain perceives familiar patterns in random shapes. While many viewers identify the silhouette of a giraffe with a long neck and mid-stride legs, others have reported seeing the outline of a squirrel within the same cosmic structure.
