NASA study finds no ceiling on Earth's response to solar storms
A NASA‑led paper published in *Nature* reports that Earth’s reaction to solar storms may have no upper limit. Analyzing more than one million solar‑wind measurements taken by near‑Earth spacecraft such as MMS and THEMIS, the researchers found a direct relationship between solar‑wind intensity and electric currents in the upper atmosphere, overturning the long‑standing view that the response plateaus.
The apparent limit was attributed to earlier reliance on data from spacecraft at the Lagrange‑1 point, a million miles closer to the Sun, which gave a distorted picture of the wind reaching Earth. The new findings suggest that extreme space‑weather events could produce far stronger impacts on satellites, GPS signals, communication systems and power grids than previously modeled. “Our planet’s magnetic field does a really great job of protecting us… but there are extreme cases where satellites unexpectedly fall back to Earth, or we lose communication and GPS signals,” said Maria Walach of Lancaster University.
The study calls for a reassessment of risk models for rare, one‑in‑a‑thousand‑year solar events and urges vigilance in preparing for potential technological disruptions.
