NASA Launches Swift Telescope Rescue Mission

NASA has launched a pioneering rescue mission to save the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, a 1.6‑ton space telescope launched in 2004 that studies gamma‑ray bursts. The observatory’s orbit has decayed faster than expected due to heightened solar activity, putting it at risk of uncontrolled re‑entry within months.

The rescue uses a small spacecraft called Link, built by the private company Katalyst Space Technologies. Link is a three‑armed robotic servicer that will rendezvous with Swift, grapple it, and use its thrusters to raise Swift’s orbit by roughly 200 km, extending its operational life by about a decade. The mission was funded with a $30 million NASA contract and is the first commercial effort to service a satellite that was not designed for on‑orbit repair.

Link was launched on July 3 2026 from the Marshall Islands on a Pegasus XL solid‑fuel rocket air‑launched from a modified Lockheed L‑1011 aircraft. After a successful deployment, ground controllers confirmed Link’s systems are operating and communications with Swift have been established. Over the coming weeks Katalyst will perform checkout procedures before attempting the capture and lift, a high‑risk maneuver that could demonstrate a new capability for sustainable space operations.
