NASA launches Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to study the cosmos
NASA successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on August 30, 2026, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The spacecraft was carried into orbit by a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The mission, which cost approximately $4.3 billion, is designed to conduct a massive survey of the cosmos to investigate dark energy, dark matter, and the evolution of the universe.
The telescope features a field of view approximately 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope. It is currently traveling to the Sun-Earth Lagrange point 2 (L2), located about 1.5 to 1.6 million kilometers from Earth, a journey expected to take roughly 100 days. Once operational, the observatory aims to discover tens of thousands of exoplanets, thousands of supernovae, and billions of galaxies.
One of the key scientific instruments is a coronagraph, which will allow the telescope to block starlight to directly image planets orbiting other stars. The mission has an initial planned duration of five years, though it may be extended. The telescope will work in conjunction with other observatories, such as the James Webb Space Telescope and the Euclid mission, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the universe's structure.
