Voyager 1 to reach one light-day distance from Earth
NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft is projected to reach a distance of one light-day from Earth on November 18, 2026. This milestone represents a distance of approximately 26 billion kilometers, meaning a signal sent from Earth will take 24 hours to reach the probe, with another 24 hours required for a response to return.
Launched in 1977, the probe was originally designed for a five-year mission to study Jupiter and Saturn. It has since entered interstellar space and continues to operate nearly 50 years later. To manage dwindling power levels, engineers have implemented a strategy of progressive load shedding, deactivating non-critical instruments to prioritize vital scientific tools and telecommunications.
Recently, mission specialists successfully restored contact with the spacecraft after a 48-hour loss of communication between October 18 and 20. The interruption was caused by an engine group shutdown that triggered the activation of backup systems and a temporary sleep mode. NASA continues to investigate the cause of this unprecedented behavior while managing the probe’s aging hardware and decreasing energy production.
