NASA X-59 completes test flights to enable quiet supersonic travel

NASA’s experimental X-59 aircraft, developed with Lockheed Martin, has successfully completed its technical evaluation phase after 25 test flights. During its final test flight over the Mojave Desert, the aircraft reached Mach 1.2 at an altitude of approximately 15,000 meters, confirming its aerodynamic stability and structural integrity.

The mission, known as Quesst, aims to measure the aircraft's sonic footprint to influence regulatory changes. Since 1973, the FAA has largely prohibited civil supersonic flights over land due to noise concerns. NASA is working to demonstrate that the X-59 can disperse shockwaves into quieter, discrete sounds, potentially allowing the FAA to replace current bans with acoustic-based criteria.

Other industry players, such as Boom Supersonic, are also pursuing supersonic travel. Boom’s XB-1 demonstrator has already achieved supersonic speeds, relying on atmospheric refraction and flight altitude to minimize ground noise. While these technological advancements could pave the way for a new era of commercial supersonic flight, the FAA has not yet established a timeline for implementing new noise regulations.
