Nasarawa State bans minors from all mining activities
The Nasarawa State Government has implemented a ban on all individuals under the age of 18 from participating in mining activities across the state’s 13 local government areas. The decision, announced by the Commissioner for Environment, Solid Minerals and Mining, Margaret Elayo, aims to protect children from health risks, environmental hazards, and the loss of educational opportunities.
The ban is comprehensive, prohibiting minors from being present at mining sites in any capacity, including as labourers, errand runners, or food vendors. Specific concerns were raised regarding mining sites in Wamba, Nasarawa-Eggon, and Kokona, where children have reportedly been exposed to significant dangers.
To enforce this directive, the state has established a special monitoring and enforcement team. This team is tasked with inspecting mining communities and arresting individuals or companies operating without valid licences or government clearance. Authorities stated that any company, site operator, or parent found violating the directive will face arrest and prosecution under the Child Rights Law and existing mining regulations.
