Nasaruddin Umar remains Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs
The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs has officially denied rumors claiming that Minister Nasaruddin Umar has resigned from his position. Thobib Al Asyhar, Head of the Bureau of Public Relations and Communication, clarified on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, that no resignation letter has been submitted to the Palace and labeled the reports as hoaxes.
The speculation originated from online media reports suggesting that Nasaruddin Umar intended to step down to focus on his candidacy for the Chairperson of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Executive Board. Nasaruddin Umar personally addressed the rumors in an interview, stating he has no plans to leave his post and never sent a resignation letter.
Authorities noted that the spread of such misinformation could cause unrest among the public, particularly ahead of the 35th Nahdlatul Ulama Congress in Jombang. The Ministry has urged the public to verify information before sharing it.
