NASA's Curiosity rover marks 5,000 sols on Mars

NASA's Curiosity rover has reached a significant milestone, completing 5,000 sols of operational activity on Mars. To commemorate the achievement, NASA released a composite panorama designed to resemble a postcard from the Red Planet.

The images were captured using black-and-white navigation cameras while the rover was positioned on a sand ridge known as ‘Chocolatal’. The first image was recorded on sol 5,000 (August 30, 2026), and the second on sol 5,003 (September 2, 2026). These images were later combined, with blue and yellow tones added artistically to represent morning and afternoon views, respectively.

Curiosity is currently exploring the base of Mount Sharp within Gale Crater. The rover utilizes a Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG) as its primary power source, enabling its continued mission to determine if Mars was ever habitable for microbial life.
