NASA readies Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope for August 30 launch
NASA has confirmed that the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will launch no earlier than 30 August 2026. The observatory will be lifted aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Technicians have completed fueling, loading roughly 290 gallons (≈1,100 L) of hydrazine into the telescope’s propulsion system.
The Roman Telescope will travel to the Sun‑Earth Lagrange point L2, about 1.5 million km from Earth, where it will operate for a planned five‑year primary mission, potentially extending further. Its field of view is about 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope, enabling surveys of up to a billion galaxies and the detection of thousands of exoplanets. The mission’s science goals include probing dark energy, mapping the expansion of the universe, and studying exoplanets and other infrared astrophysical phenomena.
Project scientist Julie McEnery said a single month of observations could map half of the Milky Way’s stars and produce a catalog larger than any existing. The launch is nine months ahead of the original schedule, reflecting accelerated integration and testing.
