NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to Launch Early August 2026 on SpaceX Falcon Heavy

NASA will launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 30 August 2026, about eight months ahead of its original schedule and within a $4.3 billion budget. The mission will ride a SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch vehicle.

The observatory carries a Wide‑Field Instrument and a novel active coronagraph that uses a 48 × 48 array of deformable mirrors. Engineers describe the mirrors moving “around a tenth of a hydrogen atom’s diameter.” The telescope will conduct large‑area sky surveys, search for cold, Jupiter‑like exoplanets, and hunt intermediate‑mass black holes, offering a field of view roughly 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope. Astronomer Meredith MacGregor emphasized that the instrument “looks directly at the planet, and that is extremely powerful.”
