NASA's Ranger 7 mission sends first high‑resolution lunar images before impact

On 31 July 1964 the U.S. spacecraft Ranger 7 transmitted the first clear, high‑resolution photographs of the Moon’s surface. The probe, still more than 2,000 km from the Moon, sent a sequence of over 4,300 images that covered roughly 360 km of terrain, allowing scientists to identify Mare Nubium and the large craters Alphonsus, Ptolemaeus and Arzachel.

The mission, managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and relayed via the Deep Space Network, was not intended to orbit or land; its design called for a planned collision that would end the flight. Six television cameras captured the approach, delivering images with a resolution approaching half a metre per pixel. The final complete picture arrived just 2.3 seconds before impact, after which the spacecraft was destroyed.

Ranger 7’s data marked the first time a U.S. probe photographed the Moon up close, providing detail a thousand times finer than ground‑based telescopes and revealing a landscape of varied crater sizes that had previously appeared smooth from Earth.
