NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope set for August 30, 2026 launch

NASA has confirmed that the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will launch on 30 August 2026 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The observatory has been fully fueled with about 1,100 liters of hydrazine and is now in the final pre‑launch phase. Once in space, the telescope will travel to the Sun‑Earth L2 point, roughly 1.5 million km from Earth, where it will operate for an initial five‑year mission that could be extended another five years.

The Roman telescope features a 2.4‑metre primary mirror—similar in size to Hubble’s—but its Wide‑Field Instrument provides a field of view about 100 times larger, enabling panoramic infrared surveys of billions of galaxies, thousands of supernovae, and up to 100,000 new exoplanets. It will also investigate dark energy and dark matter, generating more than 500 terabytes of data per year. The project, built by L3Harris Technologies with mirrors supplied by the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office, is budgeted at roughly $4.3 billion, slightly below original estimates. NASA officials, including Administrator Jared Isaacman and project scientist Julie McEnery, say the mission will open new windows on the cosmos and complement observations from the James Webb Space Telescope.
