NASA is preparing to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on August 30, 2026, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The observatory will be carried into space by a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket and is destined for the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point, approximately 1 million miles from Earth.

Named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, the telescope is designed to explore the mysteries of the universe, specifically focusing on dark matter, dark energy, and the discovery of exoplanets. It features a 2.4-meter primary mirror, similar in size to the Hubble Space Telescope, but its Wide Field Instrument provides a field of view roughly 100 times larger than Hubble’s. This capability allows the telescope to survey the sky much faster, with the potential to discover approximately 100,000 new exoplanets using transit and microlensing methods.

The mission, which was originally developed by the National Reconnaissance Office before being transferred to NASA in 2012, aims to map billions of galaxies and provide unprecedented data on the composition and expansion of the cosmos.
