NASA's Roman Space Telescope to launch Aug 30 2026, targeting dark matter and asteroid defense
NASA will launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from Kennedy Space Center on August 30, 2026 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy. The observatory, featuring a 2.4‑meter primary mirror and a 300‑megapixel infrared camera, is designed to study dark matter, dark energy and the expansion of the universe. Beyond its cosmology mission, scientists say the telescope’s ultra‑wide field—about 100 times larger than Hubble’s—makes it well suited for planetary‑defense work. Its camera could spot near‑Earth asteroids as small as 60 feet (≈18 m), comparable to the Chelyabinsk event, and help refine the orbits of objects flagged by dedicated surveys such as NASA’s Near‑Earth Object Surveyor (launching in 2027). Minor software tweaks are needed to prevent the system from filtering out asteroid streaks. Demonstrating this secondary capability may bolster congressional support for the mission, which faced budget cuts in previous years.
