NASA's Swift Boost Mission to Rescue Falling Space Telescope
NASA is set to launch the Swift Boost rescue mission on June 27, using a Pegasus XL rocket released from the carrier aircraft Stargazer. The mission will deploy the 425‑kg LINK spacecraft, built with Arizona firm Katalyst Space, to rendezvous with the aging Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, whose orbit has been decaying faster than expected due to increased solar activity.
LINK will dock with Swift, tug it into a higher orbit and extend the telescope’s operational life by at least five years. The operation marks the first attempt to service a scientific satellite that was never designed for in‑orbit repair, demonstrating a new model for prolonging the lifespan of space assets.
The Swift telescope, launched in 2004, has been a key observatory for gamma‑ray bursts and other high‑energy phenomena. Without intervention, it could re‑enter Earth’s atmosphere by the end of 2026. Successful completion of the mission would preserve its scientific contributions and validate commercial technologies for future satellite servicing.
