NASA's Swift telescope rescue mission hit by LINK spacecraft attitude-control failure
NASA launched the Swift Boost mission on 3 July, sending the privately built LINK spacecraft—developed by Katalyst Space Technologies and carried aloft on a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL air‑launched rocket—to rendezvous with the 20‑year‑old Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and raise its orbit. The $30 million rescue effort aims to prevent Swift, launched in 2004, from re‑entering Earth’s atmosphere as its orbit decays.
Within weeks of launch, LINK entered an uncontrolled spin after two of its three reaction wheels failed and part of its cold‑gas thruster system lost functionality. The attitude‑control loss caused intermittent communication with ground stations. NASA reported that all other major subsystems remain operational and the spacecraft stays power‑positive, and engineers are attempting to use LINK’s electric propulsion to stabilize the vehicle and assess whether the mission can still proceed.
If the rescue fails, Swift is expected to descend into the atmosphere this fall, ending a two‑decade scientific record of gamma‑ray burst observations.
