NASA's Swift Telescope Rescue Mission Delayed by LINK Spacecraft Malfunction
NASA launched the small LINK spacecraft in early July to push the aging Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory into a higher orbit and extend its scientific life. The mission, a rapid‑response effort by Katalyst Space Technologies of Arizona, encountered a critical attitude‑control failure: two of the three reaction wheels stopped working and the cold‑gas thruster system lost functionality, causing LINK to tumble uncontrolled.
Engineers are now using electric thrusters to halt the spin and re‑configure the navigation system before attempting a rendezvous with Swift. The setback pushes the expected docking to the end of August, a delay of several weeks, but NASA officials say there remains enough time to boost the 1.6‑ton telescope before increased atmospheric drag forces it back into the atmosphere.
Swift, launched in 2004, has outlived its original mission and is now threatened by heightened solar activity that expands Earth’s upper atmosphere, increasing drag on low‑Earth‑orbit satellites. The rescue operation remains high‑risk, high‑reward, and NASA continues to work closely with Katalyst to complete the mission.
