Kyle Busch, two-time NASCAR champion, dies at 41 after severe illness

Kyle Busch, the 41‑year‑old two‑time NASCAR Cup Series champion, died on Thursday, May 21, 2026. His family announced earlier that day that he had been hospitalized with a "severe illness" and would miss the upcoming Coca‑Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. No cause of death was disclosed.

Busch left a 22‑year career that includes Cup Series titles in 2015 and 2019, 63 Cup wins (ninth all‑time), and record‑setting totals in the sport’s other national series – 102 victories in the Xfinity (O’Reilly Auto Parts) Series and 69 in the Craftsman Truck Series. He had won a Truck Series race at Dover just a week before his death and competed in the NASCAR All‑Star Race days earlier.

A joint statement from his family, Richard Childress Racing and NASCAR described him as a "rare talent" who was "fierce, passionate, immensely skilled" and who inspired a loyal fan base called the “Rowdy Nation.” He is survived by his wife Samantha and their children, Brexton (11) and Lennix (4). Tributes poured in from drivers, teams and racing organisations worldwide.
