NASCAR Chase format sees mixed viewership and fan reaction

NASCAR’s decision to reintroduce ‘The Chase’ postseason format has resulted in mixed outcomes regarding viewership and fan engagement. Data from the 2026 Cup Series Chase shows an average of 1.62 million viewers over six races, representing a marginal 1% year-over-year increase. However, specific events have seen declines, such as the Bank of America 400 at Charlotte, which drew 1.48 million viewers on USA Network, a 15% decrease from the previous year.

Critics note that the first seven races of the postseason are broadcast exclusively on cable via USA Network, which may limit reach compared to other major sporting windows.

On the track, the revised format—which features sixteen drivers and a single standings reset rather than elimination rounds—has sparked debate among fans. At Phoenix Raceway, the seventh race of the ten-event Chase, significant shifts in the championship standings occurred after Kyle Larson suffered a cut tire and Denny Hamlin faced penalties. Tyler Reddick secured the victory, leaving the title race more competitive heading into the season finale at Homestead-Miami.
