NASCAR declines to penalize McDowell and Stenhouse Jr. after Charlotte clash

NASCAR officials have confirmed that no penalties, fines, or suspensions will be issued to drivers Michael McDowell and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. following their post-race conflict at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The incident occurred during the cooldown lap after the Bank of America 400. Stenhouse used his No. 47 Chevrolet to door-slam McDowell’s No. 71 vehicle multiple times. McDowell retaliated by hitting Stenhouse from behind and eventually spinning him out. While the drivers exchanged words on pit road, the situation reportedly did not escalate further.

NASCAR VP of Racing Communications Mike Forde stated that officials conducted a thorough review using in-car cameras, overhead blimp footage, and other angles. He noted that the decision to forgo penalties was based on the fact that neither driver hit a wall and both had their window nets up. To prevent future escalations, NASCAR plans to meet with both drivers ahead of the upcoming race at Phoenix Raceway to ensure cars are not used as weapons.
