NASCAR permits brake component changes at Phoenix Raceway
NASCAR has updated its rulebook to allow teams to replace front brake rotors and pads following practice and qualifying sessions at Phoenix Raceway. This decision follows several high-profile braking failures at tracks including Iowa, Nashville, and World Wide Technology Raceway, which resulted in heavy impacts and driver safety concerns.
Previously, regulations limited the ability of crews to address brake issues, leading to significant frustration among competitors. Driver Denny Hamlin had previously criticized the lack of flexibility regarding brake repairs, citing it as a safety issue. Under the new rule, teams are restricted to front brake components only; no other brake system parts may be changed during this specific window. However, teams may still inspect rear rotors during Sunday’s pre-race adjustments, with any subsequent issues being managed by NASCAR on a case-by-case basis.
