NASCAR runs Coca‑Cola 600 under somber mood after Kyle Busch’s death

On Sunday, NASCAR’s Coca‑Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway took place three days after the death of 41‑year‑old Kyle Busch, who held the most wins (234) in the series. Busch died from severe pneumonia that progressed to sepsis, according to his family.

Drivers described a gloomy atmosphere. Connor Zilisch said, “It just doesn’t feel like a real race weekend,” and Joey Logano noted the “very different vibe.” All cars carried a black No. 8 decal to honor Busch, and the video board displayed an in‑memoriam photo.

NASCAR officials decided to run the event. CEO Steve O’Donnell said Busch would want the race to continue. Rain had washed out qualifying, placing points leader Tyler Reddick on the pole. Austin Hill substituted for Busch in the No. 33 car for Richard Childress Racing, while the No. 8 remains retired until Busch’s son is ready.
