Nasdaq CEO prioritizes collateral management in tokenization strategy
Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman has identified collateral management and mobility as the most immediate business opportunities within the tokenization sector. During a third-quarter earnings call, Friedman highlighted a successful proof-of-concept test conducted on the Canton Network involving major investment management firms Vanguard and Wellington.
In this trial, money market fund securities were tokenized using Nasdaq technology and issued as digital tokens on the privacy-enabled blockchain. The test demonstrated that collateral could be moved between pools instantly and perfectly, with settlement finality occurring in real time and collateral inventories updating automatically within Nasdaq’s Calypso platform.
Friedman also emphasized that Nasdaq is focusing on tokenization models that bring securities onto the blockchain while maintaining direct ownership of the underlying assets. She cautioned against stock-backed derivatives and trading outside established market systems, noting that such practices could obscure market trading, fragment liquidity, and weaken price discovery for investors and issuers.
